Some say this is also the work of the witches’ curse-a way of upping the stakes so to speak. And of those 18, the inscriptions are so badly weathered that it’s impossible to make out who’s who. Of the 67 tombstones that once stood in Loon Lake Cemetery, only 18 remain today.
In fact, the exact burial spots of all three witches are unknown. Her ancient headstone was removed years ago, evidently in an effort to save it from the clutches of vandals. Trying to avoid Mary Jane’s grave is tricky, however. Legend has it that people who tread upon the grave of this witch will die within 72 hours. Mary Jane’s curse is taken especially seriously because she is said to have possessed highly developed supernatural powers. Mary Jane, considered the most powerful of the three witches, was beheaded by the townspeople of Petersburg in 1881. The spirits of these witches reportedly frequent the grounds, waiting to make good on their curse to deliver a most unpleasant and unnatural death to anyone who dares desecrate their graves. Located a short distance from the highway between Jackson and Petersburg, Loon Lake Cemetery is the eternal resting place of three witches brutally executed more than 100 years ago. It’s also reputed to be one of the most dangerous-and with good cause. Loon Lake Cemetery near Lakefield is said to be one of the most haunted places in Minnesota.
I've heard many stories of friends and family who were driving near the cemetery, whether to find the gravestone or just out to the lake to fish/bbq and found their car suddenly stall out. Of course, anyone from Southwest Minnesota likely knows the story of Mary Jane and has likely visited the cemetery at Loon Lake. There are tons of great stories from the most abandoned prairie farm house to the deepest northern forest to the darkest city alleys.
