Senior elementary education major Jocelyn DeSevo said when she was a freshman, she recognized a great difference between the time she spent on homework in college and the time she had spent in high school. But when some students arrive at college as freshmen, they find a sizable difference between high school and college - the need for more studying. High school teachers spend four years guiding and teaching their students, while preparing them for the transition from high school to college. Snow said the university is currently working with students to bring programming, such as comics and bands, to the café to make students’ experiences at La Verna even more enjoyable.Īcademic transition from high school to college In only a few months, Café LaVerna has established itself as a popular spot on campus. Students submitted their creative suggestions then the student body voted for their favorite name. Bonaventure students participated in a contest to select the café’s name. Bonaventure also wrote the “Itinerarium,” the foundational text of Clare College, at LaVerna. La Verna is named for a mountain retreat near Assisi, Italy frequented by St. Snow said its location in the middle of campus where there is heavy student, faculty and staff traffic allows it to be a place where the entire St.

“It’s just a nice atmosphere to hang out and relax,” she said. Like many others, freshman Gabrielle Heerschap enjoys the leather chairs. “The seating groups with leather furniture along the windows, in front of the fireplace and at either end are designed to provide small groups or couples a more comfortable option,” Snow said. “I like the fireplace and the ambiance is really nice,” she said.īrenda McGee Snow, vice president for business and finance, said comfort was a key component in La Verna’s design. “It’s very cozy.”Īnita Sambamurty, another freshman, said she also enjoys the atmosphere at La Verna. “I go there because I like the atmosphere,” she said. Schroeder goes to La Verna most often to relax on evenings and weekends. She anticipates using it to do more work as it accumulates. It’s entirely wireless, so students who choose to bring their laptops to do work can access the Internet.įreshman Ashley Schroeder said she occasionally uses La Verna to do her reading for class.
